In celebration of the 100th anniversary of its plumbing and tile business, Japanese company LIXIL Corporation released Bathtope, a fabric bathtub that gives homeowners the flexibility of having a tub without the additional square footage needed for a permanent fixture.
The bathtub is made from multilayered woven polyester with a two-layer polyurethane film for waterproofing. It’s composed of
a single sheet of fabric to avoid leaks or degradation of seams over time. It needs to be suspended from wall hooks for use but is adaptable to various widths of shower stalls. It can hold a person weighing 100 kilograms (220 pounds) plus approximately 140 liters (37 gallons) of water—an additional 308 pounds, which is why it needs the security of hooks installed in a wall.
When folded and rolled up, it’s about 100 millimeters (4 inches) in diameter and 650 millimeters (26 inches) long.
The fabric tub was previewed at DESIGNART Tokyo 2024 and is available in five colors, currently sold in Japan only.
