Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA) has announced the appointment of four new members to its board of directors.

“We are excited about the growth and wide-ranging expertise of our board,” says Sasha Stolyarov, Ph.D., CEO of AFFOA. “I look forward to working with each new board member to expand our impact regionally and nationally.”

New board members

Brian Johnson, president of MassMEDIC, leads a network of medical device companies, suppliers, research institutions and academic health centers. His experience in wearable medical technologies is expected to support AFFOA’s efforts to expand advanced fabric applications.

Francisco J. Martinez, vice president of research and development at Bethel Industries, brings private-sector experience in product development and government partnerships. His background includes work supporting defense applications and developing tactical and protective gear, as well as leadership and engineering roles at Protect The Force Inc., Unifire Inc. and the U.S. Army DEVCOM Soldier Center.

Stacy Swider, vice president of investments at MassVentures, focuses on sourcing and supporting deep-tech startups. Her experience in investor relations and materials science is expected to help broaden AFFOA’s pipeline of technologies and collaboration opportunities related to smart materials and manufacturing. Swider previously led the SBIR Center of Excellence at the UMass Lowell Research Institute.

Steven Tran, executive vice president of finance and contracts at Activate, brings experience in financial planning, audits, contracting and grant management. He previously held roles at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and served as senior director of operations at AFFOA.
