Shawmut Corporation has launched Shawmut Insights™, a proprietary life-cycle assessment (LCA) system that provides detailed visibility into the environmental impact of automotive and industrial textile products.

Shawmut Insights is designed to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers understand environmental impacts, from raw materials to end-of-life, across Shawmut’s range of warp-knit headliner composites, laminated fabrics and other technical textile systems.

“For the first time, designers and engineers can explore how each material choice, down to the fiber source or lamination configuration, affects environmental performance,” says Nicholas Hammond, product sustainability and compliance manager at Shawmut. “Shawmut Insights was built for flexibility and granularity. It allows us to trace every material flow through our supply chain and pinpoint the exact drivers of environmental impact at each stage of a product’s life cycle.”

With more precise, validated data, automotive customers can measure and report Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for Shawmut products with far greater accuracy, supporting corporate sustainability disclosures and material selection aligned with evolving ESG requirements.

Shawmut Insights adheres to ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006 and aligns with the product category rules (PCR) for nonwoven fabrics and fabrics. Impact-assessment outputs follow EPD EF 3.1 and include four measurements of global warming potential, ensuring consistent and transparent reporting across evaluated products.

Key features of Shawmut Insights

  • On-demand analysis: Real-time LCA modeling for custom automotive textiles, including warp-knit headliner composites
  • Third-party reviewed: Verified conformance with ISO 14040/44 standards and PCR for nonwoven fabrics and fabrics
  • Actionable sustainability data: Helps automakers quantify and reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions
  • Scenario modeling: Evaluates trade-offs such as recycled vs. virgin content, sourcing regions or production methods
  • Design integration: Places environmental impact alongside cost and performance early in the development cycle
