HKS Architects contacted the Retractable Structures division of Eide Industries, Inc., to build a motorized fabric canopy system to complement and expand the outdoor dining area for the Lemon Grove Restaurant in Hollywood, Calif. Located on the rooftop of The Aster, a private members club and boutique hotel, the Lemon Grove is open to the public with reservations and features views of the iconic Capitol Records Building and Hollywood sign.
The project won an “Outstanding Achievement” award in the 2024 International Achievement Awards.
The Retractable Structures division of Eide Industries, Inc., designed and fabricated the structural steel frame, engineered to withstand 94 mph wind loads and measuring 47 feet, 7 inches wide by 11 feet 4 inches high, with a 30-foot projection. The canopy structure includes four 12-foot-wide bays designed to accommodate the top cover’s retracting and tensioning systems. Four Corradi Impact motorized units were specified with flame-retardant Serge Ferrari Soltis Proof W96 fabric membranes to provide a total shade coverage area of 1,420 square feet.
